Some Pretty Good Free Speech
Today is “Bill of Rights” Day, the day in 1791 when we proved our Constitution was meant to adapt and change according to our needs. It signifies something we’ve inherited from those in the past, something harder to see see in our era of excess and selfishness, something best summed up by a famous Native American Indian Chief who was killed on this same day 99 years later by agents of the Federal government.

After months of hearings and testimony from across South Dakota, lawmakers are staring at a familiar problem with even more moving pieces. A state task force has advanced 19 different proposals aimed at easing rising property taxes, while a separate ballot measure could put a full overhaul before voters in 2026. The question now is whether a crowded slate of ideas leads to meaningful reform—or another round of gridlock. Kevin Killough with South Dakota News Watch has the full story.
The University of North Dakota is extending its reach well beyond the campus—and into orbit. UND has entered a new partnership with Voyager Technologies, a major player in space and defense, building on its growing role in national security and aerospace research. The agreement ties UND to work on machine learning and future space missions, including Voyager’s planned commercial space station set to launch later this decade. For UND, it signals a long-term bet on space, security, and advanced research as core parts of its future. Joshua Mathisen with KX News has the full story.
The Minot School Board covered a wide range of business at its December meeting, from the pending auction of the Bell School building to the long-term future of high school hockey. Board members approved documents clearing the way for a February auction while noting the need for clearer guidelines down the road. They also heard an update showing Minot United will remain a combined hockey program for several more years, along with a clean annual audit that raised no major concerns. Charles Crane with Minot Daily News has the full story.
Foster care providers in Ward County say the need for stable, licensed homes is becoming harder to meet. With limited options available, some foster families are extending their licenses simply because there’s nowhere else for children to go—especially sibling groups that need to stay together. Local organizations like CASO are also leaning more on respite care to prevent burnout among foster parents. Kyona Rivera with KMOT has the full story.
A long-running fight over who controls the nation’s wetlands is resurfacing in North Dakota. At a public listening session in Bismarck, state officials and industry groups backed a Trump administration proposal that would sharply limit federal authority under the Clean Water Act. Environmental advocates warned the change could leave most prairie wetlands without protection, with consequences for water quality and wildlife. The debate highlights a familiar tension in the state: balancing agricultural and economic interests with the role wetlands play across North Dakota’s landscape. Joey Harris with Bismarck Tribune has the full story.
On This Day
On this day in 1791, we began the practice of amending our constitution to better serve and protect us from ourselves. In 1890, that protection had not yet been extended to Native Americans, particularly one individual on the prairie. In 1961, justice finally arrived to collect one notorious Nazi. In 1960 Minot, the B-52s were coming, high school debate was front page news, edible history was worth reading, and the parable of Nick and Sam offers us an uncomfortable comparison to America in our own time.
On this day in 1791, the Bill of Rights—the first ten amendments to the United States Constitution—was ratified, guaranteeing fundamental rights and freedoms to American citizens.
On this day in 1890, Sioux Chief Sitting Bull was killed during an arrest attempt by Indian police at the Standing Rock Indian Reservation, marking a tragic moment in Native American history.
On this day in 1961, former Nazi leader Adolf Eichmann was sentenced to death by an Israeli court for his role in organizing the Holocaust.
Born & Died: Gustave Eiffel, (Born, 1832) French engineer who designed the Eiffel Tower, Sitting Bull, (Died, 1890) Hunkpapa Lakota leader and chief, Maxwell Anderson, (Born, 1888) American playwright and screenwriter, J. Paul Getty, (Born, 1892) American oil tycoon and philanthropist, Walt Disney, (Died, 1966) American animator and entertainment pioneer, Glenn Miller, (Died, 1944) American big band musician and bandleader, Alan Freed, (Born, 1921) American disc jockey credited with popularizing the term “rock and roll”, Edna O’Brien, (Born, 1930) Renowned Irish novelist, Oscar Niemeyer, (Born, 1907) Brazilian architect famed for modernist designs.
Way out in the old, old West, a couple of ranchers named Nick and Sam kept having troubles over cattle, water rights and homesteaders. This led to harsh words and preparation for the inevitable gun fight.
Why we published it:
Given America’s new tactics in the “War on Drugs”, it’s getting a little harder to figure out if we’re Nick or Sam in these scenarios.
Minot High School’s debate squad took third place in overall speaker points and wins at the Fourth Annual Little National Debate Tournament in South St. Paul, Minn., Friday and Saturday.
Why we published it:
What was in the paper was a reflection of what we valued. Today, athletics is featured prominently, daily; speech and debate rarely gets column inches much less a piece of the front page.
This plant is a member of the pea family and has five leaflets on each leaf. The rounded or oblong part of the root becomes an inch or more in diameter. It has a leathery covering and a small, fibrous center but most of it is non-fibrous, not tough but rather tasteless. It is interesting that Meriwether Lewis commented that this root had no objectionable features, not true of other roots they ate.
Why we published it:
It not look like there’s much out there, but on closer examination, the prairie does provide. Though, “no objectionable features” is hardly a savory endorsement 🙂 And if modern-day understanding and knowledge of the ancient diet has changed, a updated contribution to this column would be welcomed!
The 4136th Strategic Wing at Minot Air Force Base is one of the first of six SAC units programmed to receive the advanced model of the B-52 Stratofortress, the B-52H, capable of carrying the “Hound Dog” guided missile.
Why we published it:
This was not front page news, but sometimes a little story tucked away on page six turns out to be a bigger deal than we might have imagined. Sixty-five years and counting and the mission continues!
