President Lincoln didn’t think anyone would remember what he said all those years ago at Gettysburg. He was right about a lot of other things, but he was wrong about that.

Wednesday: The Toughest Trivia in Minot
Wed. Nov. 19
BlueRider | Voted North Dakota’s Best Dive Bar!
The news we share here is ForMinot. You can learn more about what guides our editorial decisions here.
Downtown Minot is getting a dose of holiday magic, courtesy of a pop-up bar built entirely around Christmas cheer. Miracle on First returns to the Magic City later this month, offering nostalgic décor, seasonal cocktails, and a place for adults to unwind from the season’s rush. Director of Cheer Jon Lakoduk says the goal is simple: bring joy, spark memories, and give people a cozy spot to breathe. The bar opens Nov. 29, with reservations strongly encouraged.
After a record-breaking summer, the North Dakota State Fair isn’t coasting — it’s gearing up for an even bigger sequel. Organizers say the 2025 fair set new highs in attendance, spending, and reach, drawing visitors from every state and beyond. Now they’re leaning into America’s 250th birthday with a patriotic 2026 theme, new tech to keep crowds informed and safe, and more space for parking and livestock. The rides, concerts, and corn dogs are staying; the experience is getting an upgrade. Kyara Brown with KX News has the full story.
When a political commentator turns the mirror back on the audience, the conversation tends to get more interesting. That’s what happened when columnist Rob Port sat down with longtime friend and radio host Jarrod Thomas, drifting into a candid discussion about personal responsibility in American politics. Port argues that we often blame institutions, algorithms, and elected officials for the chaos around us while ignoring our own role in shaping it. His message is blunt but timely: democracy reflects the choices we make—and the ones we avoid. Read Mr. Port’s full commentary at Inforum linked here.
Russia’s latest overnight barrage left a grim trail across Ukraine, killing civilians, destroying homes, and pushing the country’s energy grid into emergency shutdowns. Officials say hundreds of drones and dozens of missiles were launched in waves, striking regions far from the front lines and overwhelming defenses. Rescue crews are still searching collapsed buildings, and communities across western Ukraine are facing cold, dark hours. Ukraine’s leaders say the attacks underscore a familiar message: air defenses remain the country’s most urgent need.
The debate over what to call America’s military headquarters took a sharp turn this week, as Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth personally helped attach a new “Department of War” sign to the Pentagon. The moment signaled the Trump administration’s push for a full rebrand—one that could cost taxpayers up to $2 billion and require updating hundreds of thousands of federal assets worldwide. Supporters cast it as a return to historical clarity, while critics from both parties see it as costly political theater with little strategic benefit. Hunter Schwarz with Fast Company has the full story.
Michigan’s long-delayed push to curb factory farm pollution is finally becoming real policy. After more than five years of legal wrangling, the state’s tougher rules on how large animal operations manage manure are taking effect — a shift environmental advocates say is overdue and urgently needed. The changes target the cold-weather runoff that has fueled toxic algae blooms and contaminated lakes across the state, especially Lake Erie. It’s a reminder of how slow regulatory progress can be, even when the environmental consequences don’t wait.
On This Day
On this day in 1863, a President set the gold standard for honor, humility, and remarkable speech. In 1969, a soccer legend set a new scoring standard, and in 1977 an Egyptian leader set a new, peaceful travel standard. In 1959 Minot, community betterment was worthy of an award, history was worth rebuilding, a politician was worth remembering, and the B-52s were worth looking up for.
On this day in 1863, President Abraham Lincoln delivered the Gettysburg Address during the American Civil War, giving a brief but powerful speech about freedom and equality at the dedication of the Soldiers’ National Cemetery in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania.
On this day in 1969, Brazilian soccer legend Pelé scored his celebrated “O Milésimo” goal at the Maracanã Stadium.
On this day in 1977, Egyptian President Anwar Sadat became the first Arab leader to visit Israel, marking a groundbreaking step toward peace by speaking before the Israeli Knesset in Jerusalem.

Why we published it: The rebuilt old Fort is surrounded by the state's oldest state park... Just south of Mandan and worth a stop if you're in the area or looking for an escape. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LlBjn79ALV0
To qualify for the contest each community submitted a list of community betterment projects a year ago as a goal to be achieved during the year. The scrapbooks contain pictorial and printed matter depicting progress of each project completed or underway. Not all projects are completed in the space of one year.
Why we published it: This is an idea that's overdue again... setting goals and celebrating their achievement... with the specific purpose of improving the place.
51-year old Emil Simonson, rural Berthold farmer, was sentenced by District Judge Eugene A. Burdick to a term of three to five years in the State Penitentiary on a charge of negligent homicide, in connection with a traffic accident in which the founder of the Non-Partisan League, A. C. Townley was killed.
Why we published it: Though he attempted to stay in the game his entire life, the influential period of A.C. Townley's political career was relatively brief. But it left a lasting mark on North Dakota and includes the Bank of North Dakota and the ND State Mill and Elevator.
The Minot area is along one of seven air corridors recently allocated by the Federal Aviation Agency for use by S-A-C in its low-level training, and both the six engine jet B-47’s and eight engine jet B-52’s will fly at altitudes of one thousand feet above the highest point along their routes.
Why we published it: It turns out Minot was a pretty natural place for the Air Force to settle down.
On Setting The Presidential Standard
“But, in a larger sense, we can not dedicate, we can not consecrate we can not hallow this ground. The brave men, living and dead, who struggled here, have consecrated it far above our poor power to add or detract. The world will little note, nor long remember what we say here, but it can never forget what they did here.”
— Abraham Lincoln, Gettysburg Address
