What are the Ducks Up To tonight?

Well, they’re not in the fields like they used to be, so maybe they’re headed downtown for Arts in the City? If you don’t see them there, they’ll definitely be hanging with the Wild Horses at Atypical later. Details on both are on “Today in Minot”. The fantastic photography courtesy of ND Game & Fish!

Ducks
North Dakota’s annual spring duck survey offers a sobering snapshot of the state’s changing wetlands. With May pond counts at their 52nd lowest in 78 years, waterfowl populations continue to fall. This year’s estimated breeding duck population sits at 2.66 million—down 9% from last year and...

Saskatchewan is betting on coal—at least for a little while longer. In a letter to SaskPower employees, Minister Jeremy Harrison said the province will extend the life of its coal plants as it prepares for a nuclear-powered future. The move aims to protect jobs and keep power reliable and affordable, even as it pushes back on federal clean energy regulations. With carbon capture tech in the mix and small nuclear reactors on the horizon, Saskatchewan is carving out its own path to net-zero. Jeremy Simes with The Canadian Press has the full story.

Grocery Monopolies
If you live in a small town, you probably have fewer grocery stores than you did 30 years ago — and fewer choices inside them. Independent grocers have disappeared, replaced by big national chains that now decide what’s on the shelves, how much it costs, and...

Even as inflation shows signs of cooling, the Federal Reserve isn’t ready to ease up just yet. With interest rates holding steady for a fourth straight meeting, Fed officials now predict inflation will tick back up before the year ends—though they still anticipate two rate cuts in 2024. Economic growth is expected to slow and unemployment to rise, while uncertainty around tariffs adds new layers of caution. The message from the Fed: don’t expect quick moves, but don’t rule them out either. Christopher Rugaber with Associated Press has the full story.

For years, Finland has stood by a global ban on anti-personnel landmines. But facing a long border with a newly aggressive Russia, that stance is shifting. On Thursday, Finland’s parliament voted to exit the Ottawa Convention, aligning with neighboring NATO states who’ve made similar moves. Supporters say it’s a necessary step for national defense. Critics warn it’s a retreat from humanitarian norms. The decision highlights a growing divide between long-held disarmament ideals and the realities of modern security threats in Europe’s east. Anne Kauranen with Reuters has the full story.

On This Day

On this day in 1865 the message of America’s promise reached a place and people who had not yet heard it. On this day in 1910 our fathers got their first official day on the calendar, and in 1964 the promise of rights presumed 99 years earlier became Constitutionally endorsed. In Minot, we knew early on what was causing all the litter… to bad we didn’t follow our editor’s lead.

On this day in 1865, Union General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas, and announced the emancipation of all enslaved people in the state, marking the end of slavery in Texas and leading to the celebration of Juneteenth as a significant milestone in African American history.

On this day in 1910, the first Father’s Day was celebrated in Spokane, Washington, after being proposed by Sonora Smart Dodd to honor fathers and their role in families, eventually becoming a nationally recognized holiday in the United States.

On this day in 1964, the Civil Rights Act of 1964 was approved by the United States Senate after a lengthy filibuster, paving the way for its eventual passage and marking a significant step towards ending segregation and discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, or national origin.

This points up the beer can problem. Up to several years ago beer was sold package-style in bottles and the bottles were worth cash if you returned them to the beer parlor. Now beer is sold in cans, and the cans are worth nothing. As a consequence, where it used to be that 90 per cent of the beer containers were kept by the drinkers and returned to the sellers, now 100 per cent of the containers are discarded.

Why we published it: And so it begins... the never-ending hidden subsidy of the beverage industry that includes both cleaning up their delivery vessels and then building landfills so we have a place to dispose of them.

The city council did not express itself very favorably toward such a project.

Why we published it: The housing market hasn't gotten much better in spite of 75 years of federally subsidized programs that were later adopted by Minot in spades. The lure of "federal" money proved unavoidable in the period between then and now. And still we search for solutions to make housing more affordable.

For June 19th Every Year

“The people of Texas are informed that, in accordance with a proclamation from the Executive of the United States, all slaves are free. This involves an absolute equality of personal rights and rights of property between former masters and slaves.

We believe that all men are created equal. Yet many are denied equal treatment… We have come now to a time of testing. We must not fail.

Struggle is a never-ending process. Freedom is never really won. You earn it and win it in every generation.”
