Gates open on Red River flood control for Fargo area
In Fargo, a decades-long vision to shield the metro from Red River flooding took a major step forward as water flowed for the first time into the diversion channel’s control structure. The $3.2 billion project, set for completion in 2027, will steer high waters around the city, protecting more than 260,000 residents in North Dakota and Minnesota. Leaders hailed the milestone as historic, though not without controversy—landowners south of the river continue to fight for fair compensation where floodwaters could back up during major events.
