840,000 Gallon Emulsion spill reported in Mountrail County

BISMARCK, N.D. – Hess Corporation notified the North Dakota Department of Environmental Quality of an emulsion spill from a pipeline it operates in Mountrail County on Sept. 12, 2025.

The incident occurred about 4 miles northwest of Stanley. The cause of the spill is under investigation. Emulsion is a mixture of crude oil and produced water flowing from the well head.

Hess reported the spill on Sept. 13, estimating 20,000 barrels (840,000 gallons) of emulsion released. The substance surfaced and flowed approximately 250 yards over agricultural land. No water resources have been impacted at this time.

Personnel from Environmental Quality are inspecting the site and will continue to monitor the investigation and remediation efforts.
