Reporters for Voice of America and other U.S. networks fear what’s next
The Trump administration just delivered a devastating blow to America’s international broadcasting arm, eliminating 85% of jobs at the U.S. Agency for Global Media and effectively dismantling Voice of America. The timing couldn’t be more stark: on the very day these mass layoffs were announced, a Radio Free Europe journalist was sentenced to nine years in an Azerbaijani prison on what his colleagues call trumped-up charges. Now, hundreds of foreign journalists who risked everything to work for these U.S.-funded outlets are left wondering if America will abandon them when they need protection most.
