For 12,000 years, Earth’s steady climate has been the backdrop for human civilization. Now, scientists warn that balance is unraveling. A new report finds ocean acidification has joined the list of planetary “boundaries” humanity has crossed, signaling we’ve pushed Earth’s systems into unsafe territory. The change threatens corals, shell-building organisms, and the marine food web itself. With seven of nine boundaries already breached, researchers say the risks are compounding — but also stress that human action still matters in pulling back from the brink.
