Wyoming town erects new monument to violent, anti-immigrant history
Rock Springs, Wyoming, is beginning to face a painful chapter of its past with a new sense of honesty. Nearly 140 years ago, violence tore through the town’s Chinatown, leaving 28 Chinese immigrants dead in one of the worst anti-Chinese attacks in U.S. history. This year, archaeologists unearthed remnants of that tragedy while the community unveiled a seven-foot bronze statue, Requiem, to honor the victims. The memorial marks a turning point—acknowledging both the town’s immigrant roots and the complicated debates over migration that continue today.
