‘Never too late’: Colorado’s new teacher apprenticeship program offers another path to the classroom
Colorado is tackling its teacher shortage with a new approach: train the teachers already working in schools. Through a state apprenticeship program, paraprofessionals, office staff, and others without a college degree can now earn while they learn—teaching in classrooms while completing flexible, virtual coursework toward licensure. The model is already drawing in more local, bilingual, and diverse educators, like Sergio De La Rosa and Flor Vargas, who bring life experience and community ties into classrooms where they’re needed most.
