On This Day | Standards for Teaching on the Rise
Author
MinotVoice
After Jan. 1, 1908, no third grade certificates will be issued and persons wishing to teach in North Dakota after that time will be required to hold at least a second grade certificate. There will only be the two classes of certificates, first and second, and shows the standard of efficiency in the schools of this state is gradually increasing. However, while the requirements to teach have greatly increased, the salaries paid the instructors has not increased in many years and at present there is a shortage of over 400 teachers in the state. This is caused by the good wages that are being paid in other occupations and a teacher will not teach school when he can secure a great deal more doing something else and work all the year round.

Why We Chose It
We were a growing place of opportunity at this moment, and it was a luxury we could afford — raising the standards of professional preparation without raising the wage. Today, we find ourselves in a different environment — one marked by lowering licensure requirements in the hopes of making it easier to enter the profession.
