Maine lawmakers are once again wrestling with how far to go in protecting online privacy. At the heart of the debate is whether to adopt strict limits on what data companies can collect — a model just implemented in Maryland — or stick with a more business-friendly opt-in approach favored by industry groups. Supporters say tougher rules would give consumers real control over their personal information, while critics warn of economic strain and limits on targeted advertising.
