Dakotah Faye isn’t just making music—he’s making meaning. Raised in Minot and shaped by the tension of identity, addiction, and ambition, Faye turned early poetry into a hip-hop career rooted in truth. Now sober and thriving, he channels his struggles into lyrics that heal, not just hype. His latest milestone? Opening for Tech N9ne this August in Sturgis. Kyara Brown with KX News has the full story.

With no warning and no recourse, more than a third of North Dakota’s AmeriCorps programs were abruptly shut down—91 service positions gone overnight. From early literacy efforts to rural economic development, the impact cuts deep, especially in small communities where resources are already thin. The federal agency says the programs no longer align with its priorities. Locals say they’re left scrambling to fill vital roles. As other states push back in court, North Dakota remains silent—for now. Peyton Haug with InForum has the full story.

Dickinson Public Schools has officially broken ground on a $69 million expansion and renovation of Dickinson High School—the largest construction project in district history and the first major upgrade to the facility in over 30 years. The project includes a new three-story addition, updated infrastructure, and improved safety features. After two failed bond attempts, voters approved the plan in 2023 following a focused outreach campaign. Construction is underway, with completion expected by January 2027.

Artesia, California is in the financial black today—but staying that way is another story. That’s the lesson from a recent deep dive into the city’s finances using the Strong Towns Finance Decoder, a tool that’s helping communities across North America rethink fiscal health. The results? Artesia’s doing better than most, but cracks are showing: too much reliance on outside funding and aging infrastructure with no long-term maintenance plan. The takeaway: solvency today doesn’t guarantee stability tomorrow—and Artesia is starting the hard work to plan for both. If you’re curious about what this is and why it may matter in Minot, there’s more at the link below from Strong Towns.

The U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) expects recent developments in global trade policy and oil production to contribute to lower global demand for petroleum products through 2026, contributing to lower oil prices than it previously forecast. In its May Short-Term Energy Outlook (STEO), EIA also forecasts...

Minot’s Broadway Circle will now be operated by Pathfinder Services of North Dakota. The City Council approved the agreement Monday, selecting Pathfinder over one other applicant. The organization will manage the family homeless shelter, a 17-unit apartment complex, and a commercial space that includes a restaurant and food pantry. The city took back control of the project after previous operators, Lutheran Social Services and Project BEE, exited due to financial issues. Pathfinder will pay $5,000 per month in lease payments and manage the site for 20 years as required by federal grant terms. Jill Schramm with Minot Daily News has the full story.

SBPC is deeply troubled by the abrupt notice from the AmeriCorps agency, announcing the immediate termination of nearly $400 million in grant program funding nationwide. This decision affects SBPC’s AmeriCorps initiative, the Community Builder Program. SBPC has received no indication that the program is out of...

On This Day

On this day a torpedo put us in the first world war, the turmoil in Vietnam was ending and beginning again, and Russia was teaching us a lesson about putting a tyrant in charge. In Minot, we were being railroaded by reality, we were told to clean up or there would be costs, our flour mill was immense, and it was a time to plant trees and dance.

On this day in 1915, the British ocean liner RMS Lusitania was torpedoed and sunk by a German U-boat off the coast of Ireland, resulting in the deaths of 1,198 passengers and crew. The sinking contributed to the United States’ decision to enter World War I.

On this day in 1954, the Battle of Dien Bien Phu ended with the surrender of French forces to the Viet Minh, leading to the end of French colonial rule in Indochina and the eventual division of Vietnam.

On this day in 2000, Vladimir Putin was inaugurated as President of Russia for the first time, beginning a long tenure in Russian politics that has seen significant changes in the country’s domestic and foreign policies.

Born and Died: Johannes Brahms, (Born, 1833) German composer and pianist known for his symphonies and concertos, Gary Cooper, (Born, 1901) American actor known for his roles in “High Noon” and “Sergeant York,” James Michener, (Died, 1997) American author known for epic novels like “Hawaii” and “Centennial,” Eva Perón, (Born, 1919) First Lady of Argentina and famed political leader known for her charity work, Alexander Ludwig, (Born, 1992) Canadian actor known for his roles in “The Hunger Games” and “Vikings.”

It's not too late to plant trees yet, but you will have to get busy. Get the small trees, one or two years old, and plant them in old land. Plant them in rows wide enough apart, so that you can go in with a horse and cultivate and stir up the dirt.

Why we published it: The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The second best time is today. What do you think, are we passing enough trees forward to the next generations or do we need to get planting?

The mill opened Oct. 28 last and is managed in a very capable manner, by the son of one of the owners, L. E. Miller, a young man of more than the ordinary business ability. This mill does good close work, and is costly in all of its appointments. The structure was made of a light colored brick and is very imposing. It was built right, with a strong cement foundation. Minot has no better advertisement than the Russell-Miller mill.

Why we published it: We had a literal Miller in charge of the local mill! Also, we'll harp on local food processing while we're here 😉

The Great Northern of course does not care for Minot, or any other city for that matter, and it is a cold blooded business proposition with them. A few years ago Minot gave the Great Northern every old thing she asked, allowed them to close certain streets for all time to come, and of course the excuse that was made at the time, was that Jim Hill had his eye on Minot and would do things for this city. Instead, the foxy old boy is doing things to Minot and about the only way we can make him be good, is to get the bulge on him and make him recognize us. Of course Mr. Hill has done us a number of favors of late such as tearing out the city's new bridge across the Mouse river at Anne street, and we cannot help but feel friendly to this company for the life long favor.

Why we published it: 117 years later and the we're still talking about the Anne Street Bridge. Not too much has changed with the railroads, either.

The owner of the quick lunch room at White Earth wanted to play that he was a bad #### and didn’t know how. The White Earth tailor was in his place of business one evening last week, and the proprietor thought it would be smart to make him dance. So he pulled a gun and commanded the tailor to do a few jigging stunts. To make things lively, he shot at the tailor’s toes and one bullet took off a toe. The proprietor of the lunch room became alarmed, closed up his place and took to the tall timber.

Why we published it: First, we added a soft edit. By today's standards, there's language in this piece that would offend and advance racist thinking, proving that not all our advances toward political correctness are misplaced "wokism". Second, it's a great story. Yes, the plains of North Dakota were -- at least in part -- inspiration for many a scene in a Western movie.

The City of Minot is going to be the cleanest city in the entire state, if the city board of health keeps on in the way it has started out to do business. At a meeting of this board Friday night, it was decided that the streets, alleys and yards should be cleaned up and at once. If the property owner is slow in getting this work done, the board will do it for him and charge it against his property. A number of teams have been hired by the city and within a short time the city will put on a different appearance.

Why we published it: City leadership getting stern with those who can't keep a tidy place. That's sure sign of the pride Minot's early citizens had in their little city.

On What We Owe the Future

“The earth belongs always to the living generation. They may manage it, then, and what proceeds from it, as they please during their usufruct… Every constitution, then, and every law, naturally expires at the end of 19 years.”
