After the Pandemic ‘Reset Button,’ Downtowns Reinvent Themselves
Downtowns across America are being reimagined, with cities experimenting boldly in the years since Covid-19 emptied sidewalks and offices. A new exhibit at Washington’s National Building Museum, curated by Georgetown professor Uwe Brandes, highlights how communities are reshaping their cores with bike lanes, parklets, and repurposed spaces for housing and small businesses. Called Coming Together, the show frames downtown revival as more than an economic project — it’s a civic one, asking how city centers can become inclusive, livable places for everyone.
