Nebraska first in nation to ban soda, energy drinks from public grocery aid benefits
Nebraska is testing new ground in how public food aid is spent. Starting January 1, it will become the first state to prohibit SNAP recipients from using benefits to buy soda, soft drinks, and energy drinks. The move, approved by U.S. Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins during a visit to the state, is being framed by officials as a health-first policy. Critics, however, say the change adds barriers for low-income families and stigmatizes those who rely on assistance to get by. The national conversation is just beginning.
