No Easy Fix: Farmers urged to rethink canola rotations amid verticillium threat
On a small patch of prairie near Melita, Manitoba, scientists are watching canola fields fight for survival. A soil-borne fungus called verticillium stripe is creeping through roots, choking plants just as they’re about to seed. There’s no cure, no seed treatment, and no quick fix. Scott Chalmers with Manitoba Agriculture says farmers may have to rethink their reliance on tight wheat-canola rotations — even if it means risking their bottom line. In farming, as he puts it, “we need to think outside the box.”
