North Dakota’s near-total abortion ban will remain in place after the state Supreme Court, in a 3–2 split, fell one vote short of the supermajority needed to strike it down. The majority found the law unconstitutionally vague, but that view was not enough to overturn it, leaving in force strict limits with narrow exceptions for rape, incest and serious physical health risks. The ruling caps more than two years of litigation and drew sharp responses from both anti-abortion lawmakers and reproductive-rights advocates. Mary Steurer with North Dakota Monitor has the full story.
