South Dakota State University is fighting to reclaim tens of millions in federal research dollars after the Trump administration scrapped a climate-focused grant program. The $66 million award—the largest in the state’s higher education history—was funding work with cattle and bison producers to measure soil health and open eco-friendly markets. About $20 million had already been spent when the grants were cut. SDSU has resubmitted its proposal under new rules that shift more money directly to producers, hoping to keep the project alive this fall.
