According to Minot’s Code of Ordinances 23-33B, “Sale of Tobacco to a Minor Prohibited,” the following penalties are enforced for violations:
- $50 fine for the clerk on a first offense, $150 for a second offense, and $300 for any subsequent offense.
- The business faces civil penalties as follows:
- 1st offense – $100 fine
- 2nd offense – Tobacco license suspended for 7 days
- 3rd offense – Tobacco license suspended for 30 days
- 4th offense – Tobacco license suspended for 1 year
Preventing underage tobacco use is critical, as nearly 9 out of 10 adults who smoke daily first tried smoking by age 18, according to the CDC. Ensuring compliance with tobacco laws helps protect youth and reduce long-term tobacco use.
