Icy road conditions contributed to two separate crashes involving semi-trucks in Mountrail County on Monday morning, one resulting in serious injuries and another proving fatal. Both incidents occurred within about an hour of each other and remain under investigation by the North Dakota Highway Patrol.

Serious Injury Crash near Stanley

The first crash occurred at approximately 6:45 a.m. on U.S. Highway 2 at the 4th Street Southeast intersection in Stanley. According to the Highway Patrol, a 2012 Subaru Legacy driven by a 21-year-old man from Stanley was traveling southbound and crossed the median while attempting to cross the highway. The vehicle was struck by an eastbound 2014 Peterbilt semi pulling a water-hauling trailer.

The Subaru driver, who was not wearing a seatbelt, suffered serious injuries and was transported by ambulance to Trinity Hospital in Minot. The semi driver, a 51-year-old man from Danube, Minnesota, was wearing a seatbelt and was not injured. Road conditions were icy, and the crash is classified as a T-bone collision

Fatal Crash on Highway 1804

Roughly an hour later, at about 7:55 a.m., a fatal crash occurred on Highway 1804 near mile marker 274, about five miles east of the Williams County line. A 2007 Western Star semi was traveling westbound when a 2015 Chrysler 200 crossed into the westbound lane and began sliding on the icy roadway.

The semi struck the driver’s side of the Chrysler, killing both occupants: a 21-year-old man from Bismarck who was driving and a 44-year-old male passenger from Burnsville, Minnesota. Both were wearing seatbelts. The semi driver, a 48-year-old man from Watford City, was not injured.

Emergency responders from multiple agencies assisted at the scene. The crash was also classified as a T-bone collision, and weather conditions were reported as dry despite icy roads
