Towing Accident Leads to Fatality in McHenry County

A fatal incident involving a vehicle and a pedestrian occurred on the evening of January 8, 2025, approximately five miles south of Karlsruhe in rural McHenry County.

According to the North Dakota Highway Patrol (NDHP), the crash occurred around 9:05 PM on 42nd Street North under wet road conditions and a rain-snow mix. A 64-year-old man from Voltaire, ND, was attempting to move his 1989 Ford F350 from a ditch after the vehicle became stuck while leaving a driveway. A 74-year-old man from Balfour, ND, driving a 2002 GMC Yukon, tried to tow the vehicle out.

While towing the Ford F350, the vehicles neared a structure, prompting both drivers to stop and assess their progress. Tragically, the 64-year-old exited his vehicle unnoticed, and the Yukon driver resumed towing. The Ford F350 pinned the 64-year-old man against the structure. Despite efforts to extricate him and perform CPR, he succumbed to his injuries en route to the hospital.

The NDHP, alongside the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office, Velva Ambulance, and Trinity First Response, responded to the scene. The crash remains under investigation.
